  • Two Manchester United Academy Graduates ‘Set To Be Released In The Summer’
  • Manchester United are expected to release academy graduates Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Demetri Mitchell in the summer.
Borthwick-Jackson, 23, has not played for the club since he signed a four-year contract in May 2016 and endured a slew of disastrous loans at Wolves, Leeds United, Scunthorpe United, and Tranmere Rovers. His season-long spell with Tranmere was cut short in January and Borthwick-Jackson is currently with Oldham Athletic in League Two until the end of the season.
United have the option of an additional year on Borthwick-Jackson’s deal but are set to let him leave on a free. United did likewise with Antonio Valencia and James Wilson last year.
Mitchell, also 23, has only played once for United – on the final day of the 2016-17 season – and is approaching the last two months of his deal. The left-back had two spells on loan with Hearts in 2018 but has not played since suffering a knee injury in February 2019.
Mitchell returned to training in September and outlined his intention to regain fitness by playing for the Under-23s, yet has not featured for United’s second string whatsoever.
Borthwick-Jackson and Mitchell were both discovered by United at the Fletcher Moss junior team that Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard also played for. Borthwick-Jackson was given his debut against West Bromwich Albion in November 2015 and played 14 times under Louis van Gaal, and agreed a long-term deal four days after Jose Mourinho was installed as the United manager in May 2016.
Mitchell was an unused substitute against Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in May 2017 prior to his full debut in the 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace. The Mancunian was included in both of Mourinho’s pre-season tour squads of the United States.
Angel Gomes is also out of contract at United in the summer but the club has been trying to negotiate a new deal with the England Under-17 World Cup winner. The 19-year-old’s academy teammates James Garner, Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams, Ethan Laird, and Tahith Chong have all inked extensions under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
